We've seen a few cases where Revit is unable to export extremely large projects. In our experience, this is usually related to the hardware limitations of the computer that is being used to export the file.

For very large projects, we recommend using a computer that has 32 GB, 64 GB or more RAM. We've seen instance where a model will not export on a computer with 32 GB of RAM, but it will export on a computer with 64 GB of RAM. We recommend using a local M2 or SSD drive to accelerate the reading speed of the large linked files. We also recommend having a lot of spare space on your hard drives.

We've seen some instances where Revit created over 300 GB of temporary data when exporting a very large Revit file.If you are unable to export a large Revit file, please send us the log files of the Revit Exporter along with your rough computer specifications in this format:

  • Processor: i7-8750HHard Drive:

  • M.2 1TBGraphic Card Model:

  • RTX 2080RAM:

  • 64GB

Ideally, we would like to have access to the Revit model so that we can replicate any issue to fix it. If you have permission, you can send us these models by using OneDrive, WeTransfer.com or any other file sharing service that is approved by your IT department.

In the long term, we will be working on providing users with explanations as to why a particular model export would fail, whether it be related to the computer specifications or some other factor.
